Health Education Requirement

California Teaching Credentials

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) requires:Completion of an approved course in health education, including, but not limited to, nutrition, the physiological and sociological effects of abuse of alcohol, narcotics, and drugs, and the use of tobacco. In addition all applicants for teaching credentials must also complete training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which meets, or is equivalent to, the standards set by the American Heart Association in its Heartsaver course (adult and pediatric heartsaver) or the community CPR course (includes adult, infant, and child CPR; choke rescue; and rescue breathing) offered by the American Red Cross.

At CSUSB, the HSCI 540 will meet the Health Education Requirement and there is an online section. For additional information please see:

At other institutions, courses that are accepted by CSUSB to meet the health education requirement include, but are not limited to:In addition, credential candidates (and credential holders) need to be currently certified in infant, child and adult CPR. Current certification in CPR can be accomplished though any approved CPR refresher course.

Be sure to check with the person (credential analyst) who is processing your credential to determine if a health course you have completed, or one that you are considering, will meet the Health Education Requirement.
